Running the equivalent of eight and a half marathons in seven consecutive days, through the iconic scenery of New Zealand’s Great Walks has never been attempted, until now.

On 29 November, Aucklander Malcolm Law will begin the audacious Mizone 7 in 7 Challenge with a goal to raise $50,000 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation.

A market researcher by trade, Law is taking sabbatical and devoting 2009 to completing a personal mission of raising enough money to truly make a difference to the patients and families living with blood related illness.

Leukaemia took the life of his older brother Alan back in 1969.

“The Mizone 7 in 7 Challenge is going to hurt, but there is no comparison to the pain my family went through with my brother’s sickness. Ever since Alan died I have cherished the idea of doing something amazing to help other families whose lives are affected by this cruel disease,” says Law.

This is will be no small feat. Law’s journey will begin at Lake Waikaremoana (42.7km) and travel through Tongariro Northern Circuit (41km), Abel Tasman Coast Track (51.9), Heaphy Track (78.4km), Routeburn Track (32.1km), Milford Track (53.5km) and finish at the Kepler Track (60.1km) as a competitor in the annual Kepler Challenge mountain race.

All funds generated by the Mizone 7 in 7 Challenge will go to the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation’s Patient Support Service, providing personalised support for patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood related conditions. The service includes regular visits, phone or email contact as well as face to face education and an online forum.

The Leukaemia & Blood Foundation is overwhelmed by Law’s dedication to the cause and urge New Zealand to get behind it. Pru Etcheverry, Executive Director of the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, says, “We are very humbled by Malcolm’s dedication and determination to raise awareness. With six children and adults diagnosed each day with leukaemia or a related blood condition, that support has never been more vital.”
