Work to give the North Otago Museum’s interior a new lease on life begins today. Staff will start by removing everything from the walls and protecting objects in preparation for a fresh lick of paint over the next week.

“As you can imagine our first priority is the collection, so everything has to be carefully removed and stored before this work can be carried out. Many of the artefacts are delicate and require expert handling.” said Museum Director Rowan Carroll.

The painters will begin their work on 10 June and once they have finished museum staff will begin the process of reinstalling. “We are taking this opportunity to refresh displays and make the labeling more effective; visitors will notice a difference immediately. The walls will be light and the colours neutral which is a big change from the existing 1970’s dark green and brown.” commented Miss Carroll.

The main gallery will be closed from Monday 8 June. Access to the Potions exhibition and the Community Archive will be through the Steward Street entrance from 10.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 1pm to 4.30pm in the weekends. The Archive is open from 1pm to 4 pm Monday to Friday. It is expected that the Thames Street doors will be open again on Monday 22 June.
