Local Taupo youth got involved with a wide range of activities, workshops and events at the ‘Class of 09’ Youth Festival held during national youth week.

Taupo District Council in partnership with a group of youth and local community groups and organisations provided a varied festival programme for young people aged between 12 – 18 years old. Jenny Steadman, Council’s Community Projects Officer said the objective of the festival was to celebrate and acknowledge our youth and get them involved.

“Thank you so much to the partners and sponsors involved including Café for Youth Health, Taupo Library, Taupo Venues, Sport Waikato, REAP, Lion Foundation, More FM, The Edge, MC’s Case and Eden, DJ Pix, !@M3, Hells Pizza, and a youth reference group who made this festival a reality,” said Ms Steadman.

The festival programme included self defence for teens, modelling, rock-wall climbing, guitar hero competition, Formula One driving skills competition, a superschools competition, , ‘Lets get Loud’ and ‘Electrik’ concerts and da-bomb biggest splash competition which finished the 8 day festival on the Sunday 31st May.

The festival’s biggest night was Saturday night (30 May) with the ‘Rock yer clASS OFF’ concert with popular national band Midnight Youth performing, supported by local band Siezefire, Jamie Fitzgerald and Tauranga band The Kiss Goodbye. MC Mana and DJ Scribble kept the evening running smoothly with over 500 local youth in attendance. A great time was had by all.
