19:30 20-07-2007 - Waikato rural police were kept busy last night attending concurrent serious crashes, one of which turned fatal.

At 7.30 pm a utility vehicle travelling south on SH 31 and a northbound car collided head-on approximately four kilometres north of Otorohanga near Te Kawa Road.

The woman passenger in the car died in the crash and two men were flown to Waikato hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The impact appears to have been in the centre of the road and Serious Crash staff are examining the scene in an attempt to determine the cause of the crash.

Diversions are in place at Otorohanga for northbound traffic, on to SH3 and off SH 31 at Te Kawa Road for southbound traffic.

At 7.50 pm two cars collided head-on on the Kopu-Hikuai Road; SH25a.

The sole occupant of each vehicle sustained serious injuries and both were air-lifted to Waikato hospital.

Again the cause of the crash was not immediately obvious and the Serious Crash Unit will be conducting a scene examination in due course.

Diversions are in place at each end of the Kopu-Hikuai Road and travellers can expect significant delays.

Both diversions are expected to be in place until at least midnight.
