Taupo taxis are doing their bit when it comes to community safety compared with other taxi services around the country.

Recently the Taupo Safer District project team reviewed a national survey of taxi services and were pleased to report that Taupo taxi companies provide a range of initiatives to look after customers and get them home safely.

Both Taupo taxi companies – Taupo Taxis and Top Cabs - offer a range of payment methods to ensure people out late at night can be guaranteed a ride home. They will also pre-arrange pick-ups with parents/caregivers of young people and have pre-paid taxi-trips, vouchers and a monthly account service with a pin number facility in place. Eftpos is also available and often utilised by those in the hospitality industry that work late shifts.

Council’s Project Manager - Safe Communities, Doug Scott said it was great to see our local taxi companies adopting a “safety first” approach. “It is encouraging to see that our independent taxi drivers are being responsible. They would deposit the passenger at their destination and collect the fare the next day, if the circumstances required,” he said.

“Following this piece of work, we can confidently say that Taupo’s taxi services are in line with the direction of our Taupo Safe District Plan – making Taupo district a safe place to live, visit and play,” he said.

Mr Scott suggested that parents of young people familiarise themselves with the various facilities that local taxi companies offer.
