Postive progress for Kawakawa Bay

Work continues on the Kawakawa Bay repair project and there are positive signs that show the overall stability of the site is improving.

Although there was a small amount of debris that fell on to the road last Friday, the contractor was on hand to clean up the slip and able to open Clevedon-Kawakawa Road early on Saturday morning.

Assessment of the site suggests that the debris fell because of heavy rainfall that night.

Manukau City Council Acting Economic Director Chris Freke says that until the work is completed there are going to be some minor incidents of debris falling onto the road.

“Until grass grows on the earthworks area, stabilising the soil, we can expect these incidents to occur especially during the winter months.

“Public safety is the council’s top priority so last week’s incident meant closing the road overnight. Despite this incident the council is pleased that the works are progressing on time”, says Mr Freke.

The earthworks are now mostly complete apart from minor tidying work still to be done.

A total of 80,000 cubic metres of material has been removed from the hillside to reduce the pressure on the landslip.

The works are due to be completed in October.
