Te Papa is giving New Zealanders more time to send in photos of their Matariki celebrations, which will become part of a special collection of digital images.

Exhibition Manager Adán Tijerina says there are a growing number of communities celebrating the Mori New Year in 2009 and extending the deadline to Sunday 5 July allows more people to participate.

Members of the public have already contributed more than 200 images to Capture Matariki, showing the nation how they celebrate, work, and play during the Mori New Year. You can view the current collection online at www.ourspace.tepapa.com

Mr Tijerina says he is impressed with the diversity of images, which include photos of young children, landscapes, and community festivals.

‘Members of the public are taking the time to reflect on the theme of whakawhanaungatanga (bringing people together) and contributing photos of themselves and their whnau taking part in activities to commemorate this special time of year.’

Our Space is an interactive exhibition and one of its main goals is to facilitate conversations about national identity by encouraging the public to share photos that tell stories about their lives.

On 9 July, a panel of selectors will choose 48 of the most compelling Capture Matariki images to be displayed on a massive 101-inch screen outside Te Papa. These photos will launch the Our Space TelstraClear screen on Wellington’s waterfront.

Capture Matariki is proudly supported by TelstraClear and New Zealand Post.
