Remember 2002? Oamaru water, discoloured, foul tasting and graded by the Ministry of Health as “Grade Ee - Completely unsatisfactory, very high level of risk” for both the water source and treatment, and the distribution system.

Fast forward five years to September 2007 and commissioning of the brand new, state of the art Water Treatment Plant and you can scarcely believe the immense size of the improvement - clear, fresh tasting Oamaru Water!

Proven now by nearly two years of faultless operation, Oamaru’s water supply has just been re-graded by the Ministry of Health and achieved “Grade Aa - completely satisfactory, extremely low level of risk, demonstrably high quality”.

This result is the culmination of many years of effort and commitment across all sectors of the community, stemming from the foresight and drive of residents tired of the sub-standard water quality, through to the elected representatives and staff, designers, constructors and suppliers who worked together to achieve this superb result.

Council’s Water Manager, Martin Pacey championed the project from initial inception and consultation through to design, construction, commissioning and proving and is justifiably proud and immensely pleased with the result. “This result exceeds our initial goals and provides Oamaru residents with a first class water supply equal to any in New Zealand”.
