Passengers flying in or out of Taupo are getting a bird’s eye view of the ETA taking shape after seven weeks of the bulk earthworks being underway.

Over the entire ETA, 12,000 cubic metres of soil is being shifted per day and despite the recent wet weather work has been able to continue due to the nature of pumice soils in the area. The bulk earthworks were always scheduled to take place in the winter months to help eliminate dust to neighbouring properties and assist with compaction.

‘I was travelling along Anzac Memorial Drive the other day and looked towards the work being done, and was blown away with the progress made in such a short period of time,’ said Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper. ‘Things are steaming ahead and after 30 years of waiting people of Taupo can now see the ETA is a reality.’

With the increased heavy machinery and activity on the ETA, members of the public are reminded not to venture into the site, for their own safety.
