Sir John Walker's sport of Athletics accorded him life membership in Wellington today.

Sir John's contribution to athletics has been huge. His many national titles over 800m and 1500m, Olympic 1500m title, World mile and 2000m records, breaking the historic 3m 50s barrier for the mile and running 100 sub four minute miles lifted the sport in the 1970’s and early 80’s not only within New Zealand but also around the world. His influence on the sport has been immense with Athletics New Zealand recognising this with a life membership.

Sir John said it was a great honour to be recognised by his peers.
"This is the final accolade in what has been a great year for me," said Walker.
"I was introduced to the sport at the age of seven and all I needed was shorts, singlet and a pair of shoes.
"I had fun and comradeship throughout my career, but without my coach Arch Jelley I would never have made it," said Walker on accepting the honour.
"When I first met Arch he told me that I would be a world record holder and an Olympic Champion," he added.

His life membership was proposed by Arch Jelley, who was honoured at the meeting with an Athletic New Zealand merit award.
Barry Magee of Auckland for coaching and Colin McLachlan of Wellington for administration and officiating were also accorded a merit award.
John Smart of Christchurch was elected president and Jim Blair of Wellington vice-president.

Dave Harkness of Auckland, Patrick Meffan of Nelson and Trevor Spittle of Christchurch were re-elected to the Board of Athletics New Zealand.

John Bowden, Barry Ellis and Craig Motley were re-elected as cross country and road selectors.
Heather O'Hagen of Hamilton was elected to the national technical officials committee.
