Team spirit, enthusiasm, and a thirst for victory were credited as the key factors behind the Glenfield Rovers Cougars team winning the United Soccer’s 9th grade B2 division title.
The Cougars had a wobbly start to their season in the grading round, but quickly found form to storm their way up the league points table and hold off some strong finishing by the competition to take out the hotly contested title at the weekend.
The Cougars completed the league season with the statistics of playing seven games - winning five games, drawing one game and losing one game – scoring 20 goals in the process.
Parents of the young Cougars were quick to praise the dedication and commitment of head coach Phillip McIntosh for the team’s winning season. Also on the coaching staff was assistant coach Mark Bindon and fitness trainer Mike Wiig who all combined to improve the nine-year-olds’ passing, tackling and scoring skills.
The league championship went down to the last game of the season – with any one of three teams in the hunt for the title. However, a 5- 1 victory by the Cougars over little-fancied but gutsy Albany Windsor sealed the Glenfield Rovers side’s victory spot at the top of the table.
