Further consultation on new option for Mill/Redoubt Road improvements

Manukau City Council has approved further consultation with the community on a roading option for the Mill/Redoubt Road corridor.

The council has been looking at options to provide a four lane road through the Mill/Redoubt Rd corridor that could cope with a predicted 41,000 vehicles a day by 2041. This increase from the current 11,000 a day will be the result of potential growth in Flat Bush, Papakura and Takanini.

Last August the council began community consultation on three proposed options for the upgraded road. This year the council has been investigating two other routes suggested by the community.

The council’s Policy and Activities Committee decided last night to carry out targeted consultation and further work on a route known as Option D alternative, which was proposed by the community. No further work will be done on Option X1 because assessments showed it would not divert significant future traffic from Mill/Redoubt Rd and would still require major works to be undertaken on the Redoubt Road/Mill Road corridor.

Manukau City Council Transport Portfolio Leader David Collings says initial investigations have shown the Option D alternative route could be feasible.

“This proposed route, which has come from the community, would have less impact on properties than some of the others already identified. It avoids some properties by using a minor amount of land along the boundary of Totara Park, with little impact on the park.

“However we should not lose sight of the fact that this route would still have some impact on other properties. The council will be consulting with property owners affected by this route. .

“The proposed route would see parts of Mill and Redoubt Road becoming service roads, rather than becoming part of a four lane road through the area. It would also allow better and safer access for residents to the main road than they currently have.

“Although work on any upgraded road isn’t likely to begin for a number of years, what we are doing now is identifying the preferred route. We expect to be able to select the route later this year.
“Even after the preferred route is identified there will be a number of opportunities for people to have their say,” Cr Collings says.

Mill/Redoubt Rd corridor upgrade options

• Option C - upgrade the existing alignment of Redoubt Rd and Mill Rd, and moving an 800 metre section of Mill Road near Polo Prince Drive to the east to avoid major earthworks and services.
• Option D - upgrade the existing alignment of Redoubt Road up to a point some 400 metres east of Mill Road. From there approximate 1.7 km of new road would be formed adjacent to the Watercare reservoirs, heading south to meet Mill Road between Polo Prince Drive and Ranfurly Road.
• Option D alternative (suggested by community) a variation of Option D which joins Redoubt Road opposite Kinnaird Lane and will be located to the south of Redoubt Road as it proceeds towards the Option D alignment in the vicinity of the Watercare reservoirs.
• Option J - upgrade the present Redoubt Rd and Mill Rd alignments to arterial road standard.

Murphys Road options:

• Option I - a southern extension of Murphys Road to link with Redoubt Rd to the east of the present intersection.
• Option K- a western diversion of Murphys Rd starting south of Murphys Bush and climbing at gradual rate to meet Redoubt Rd close to the location of the present intersection. This option does away with the steep southern section of Murphys Rd.
