Hastings District Council voted unanimously to financially support the annual membership to the Great Wine Capital Network.

Hastings, Hawke’s Bay and Christchurch, South Island have been selected as finalist for the internationally recognised title.

Delegates of the Bordeaux-based network are currently in Hawke’s Bay for two days judging the region’s wine and tourism industries, after having spent two days in the South Island.

At the Development and Environment Committee the council voted to underwrite the annual membership fee of between €16,000 – €20,000 (NZ $33,000 - $42,000) if Hastings is successful in its bid for the title.

The Council has had good support from the wine industry, and both Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Napier City Council, and HDC will seek financial support to help fund the annual membership fee from those and other orgsanisations.

The Council voted to underwrite the fee for one year, with an agreement to review that at the end of each year with an option to fund for a further two years.
