Unique history celebrated at North Shore Heritage Festival

Time and tide may wait for no man, but the two will be celebrated together at North Shore City’s annual Heritage Festival this October.

 

With more than 30 events remembering many facets of the coastal city’s unique history – from fashion, marriage, literature and antiques, to beach life, sport and architecture – the 2009 festival from October 2 – 12 is shaping up to be one of the best yet.

 

This is the second year the festival has been co-ordinated by North Shore City Council, with community groups submitting their events to the programme online.

 

Festival co-ordinator Jonathan Smith says the community is really getting into the heritage spirit and it’s bringing back great memories for those involved.

 

“We’ve had some really unique and interesting events submitted to the programme that I think are going to have great appeal to a variety of people.

 

“It’s interesting observing the different facets of life that people are choosing to celebrate. A couple of the highlights in this year’s programme include an antiques road show, a celebration of the works of Robin Hyde and a fashion parade showcasing bridal fashion through the years,” he says.

 

Mr Smith says this year’s festival will also reflect on a sad period in New Zealand’s history with activities to remember the 92nd anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele – including an exhibition, massed bands concert, street march and commemorative service.

 

Mayor of North Shore City, Andrew Williams says the Battle of Passchendaele was a hugely significant event in New Zealand’s history and affected many families in North Shore City.

 

“It is a great honour for the city to be hosting these commemorative events as part of the Heritage Festival.

 

“While there are many wonderful aspects of our city’s rich heritage worth celebrating, it’s also important to reflect on the great sacrifice made by our countrymen many years ago.

 

“I hope you will join us in partaking in the heritage events being held in North Shore City and in remembering those who fought bravely at the Battle of Passchendaele.”
