TAUPO

Eighty-four-year-old Trevor Hosking of Taupo received a Queen’s Service Medal in an investiture ceremony at Government House in Auckland this week for his services to the conservation of historic places.

Mr Hosking was joined by friends and family as he received the prestigious award. It recognises more than 50 years of work conserving historic places, and was presented to Mr Hosking by the Governor General Hon Sir Anand Satyanand.

Mr Hosking’s archaeological work in the Taupo district includes contributions to numerous projects of local significance. They range from Armed Constabulary sites to the excavation and recording of several early Maori occupation sites, including the caves at Whakamoenga Point, and a shelter at Waihora Bay. He was also full-time archaeologist during the Tongariro Power Development in the 1960s.

Copies of Trevor Hosking’s book ‘A Museum Underfoot’ are available at Taupo Museum. Published in 2007, the book reveals more about his fascinating career.
