Members of Forest and Bird planted native trees and shrubs in the gully between Harvey Street and Fairview Terrace as part of Conservation Week.

The planting took place on the 12th of September, the day before Conservation Week officially started, kicking it off in Forest and Bird style. Taupo District Council cleared blackberries off the bank and 110 holes were dug free of charge by ARCO.

Jan McLellan and Tony Tompkins of Forest and Bird bought 110 native plants which were delivered with the help of Dave and Glen Archer and a four wheel drive. Twelve pairs of willing hands then took to firming the plants in to the ground.

Ann Gallagher of Forest and Bird approached Taupo District Council about planting in one of the reserves, eventually choosing the area after visiting a few different sites. “We think the bank now looks lovely and colourful, and we look forward to carrying on the good work. Thanks to the Council for their assistance,” said Mrs Gallagher.

Forest and Bird plan to continue with the maintenance of the gully going forward, and they hope it adds to the enjoyment of the walk along the gully.

Councillor Barry Hickling is pleased that Forest and Bird have taken such an interest in Council reserves. “I’m delighted when community groups get involved with our reserves; we can achieve so much as a community when we work together.”
