WAIKOUAITI

Due to the dirty water in the Waikouaiti River following recent rain, the Waikouaiti water treatment plant is struggling to treat water to an acceptable standard for consumers in the Waikouaiti, Karitane, Merton and Seacliff areas.
The usual remedy for dirty water is to flush the watermains, but this will not be effective until the river clears and treated water quality improves. (For the technically minded, the turbdity is currently greater than 7 NTU which is significantly higher than the Boil water trigger of 0.5 NTU). This could take quite some time, probably more than just a few days as it will also depend on whether there is more rain in the next few days.

Residents in these areas are advised to boil water for cooking and drinking purposes until further notice.
