Learn to swim lessons at the AC Baths are now more accessible for school children in Taupo who have respiratory problems thanks to the Taupo Asthma Society.

The Society has given $18,969 to the Lake Taupo District Sports Advisory Council Inc to administer and the interest gained from which is to be used to assist Taupo school students that suffer from asthma & serious respiratory problems by subsidising 50% of the ‘learn to swim’ sessions with the swim school at the AC Baths.

Ngaire Hine and Paul Bonnet representing the Taupo Asthmatic Society were pleased that the money would continue to help with the development and support of asthma sufferers. “Asthma can be a lot of things, what we are talking about is really anyone with respiratory problems. I’m a great believer in prevention, and these swimming programmes can really help prevent asthma from affecting peoples lives,” said Mrs Hine.

AC Baths Manager and member of the Sports Advisory Virginia Munro says the swimming programmes are beneficial for asthma sufferers, “It helps encourage breathing and builds strong lungs.” Ms Munro is happy that the AC Baths can be of service to the Asthma Society. School children in the Taupo who suffer from respiratory problems can apply at the AC Baths for a grant to help with the cost of the learn to swim programme.
