For almost a decade, Dunedin Public Libraries have joined forces with Dunedin Public Hospital to provide a Books for Babies pack for every child lucky enough to be born in our fair City.

This wonderful initiative is completely free of charge, and reflects our belief in introducing babies to books at an early age.

Now, in time for the annual Christmas baby boom, these wonderful packs have evolved to include a new booklet containing even more free goodies and helpful information for Mother and Baby. In addition to advice on hot topics such as modern cloth nappies, the booklet contains a space to record your child’s favourite stories and rhymes, free Library vouchers and a complimentary Mother and Child swim thanks to Moana Pool. The pack would not be complete without its distinctive baby picture book, kindly donated by the University Bookshop, which plays such a vital part in this special gift to Dunedin’s newborn children.

When you are waiting in anticipation for a new addition to your family, Dunedin Public Libraries will be there to help introduce them to a whole world of learning and new experiences!

Otago District Health Board Group Manager Ms Pip Stewart says staff really enjoy handing out the packs to new mothers, who are usually surprised to get such a treat for free for themselves and their babies.
