Thinking of buying a pool for the kids this summer? Franklin District Council is reminding residents that even a temporary pool needs to be securely fenced.

Pools, spa pools and plastic ‘para-style’ should all be fenced to comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act.

Franklin District Council GM Environmental Services James Jefferson says that many residents don’t realise that a temporary plastic-style pool needs to be fenced. With more cheaper, temporary pools on the market, Council has seen an increase in residents failing to fence them.

“Many simply don’t realise they are breaking the law, or are simply too complacent when it comes to fencing temporary pools. Please be vigilant and watch out for our children.”

‘For those with pools already, it’s a timely reminder now as the weather warms and pools become tempting for young children, to check that your fencing still complies. Ensure greenery or playground equipment can’t be used by children to climb over the fence and that the fence is still robust.”

Mr Jefferson says another common mistake residents make is in thinking that spa pools with lockable covers meet safety standards - these must also be fenced unless they are more than 1200mm high.

It is Council’s, the property owners and the occupiers responsibility to ensure a pool is secure. All parties can be held legally accountable should an accident occur.
