CHRISTCHURCH

Double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston is recovering well from injuries sustained in the PowerNet Tour of Southland early last week.

The defending champion was forced to pull out of the event after being involved in a crash during stage two of racing.

He suffered bruising and swelling to his left knee and the right knee had a deep hematoma. He also dislocated his AC joint in his right shoulder.

After treatment in Christchurch there is no significant damage and Roulston says he is recovering well from the injuries and is enjoying a break off the bike until resuming serious training again in late November.

“I am focused on a good recovery to refresh the mind and body and I am enjoying time with the family doing things away from riding the bike before getting back into things,” he said.

If all goes to plan he hopes to chase a title that has eluded him, the Avanti Classic 160 kilometre race around Lake Taupo on Saturday 28 November that is part of the Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge weekend.

He heads overseas for 12 days early next month to join his new professional team, Columbia HTC, at a training camp on the Canary Islands and then kicks off the New Year with the RaboPlus Elite Road Cycling National Championships in Christchurch on 10 January.

The National event is followed by the Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide from 17 to 24 January where he will race for Columbia HTC for the first time.

Roulston will be back in New Zealand to race on the track in Invercargill in the Elite National Championships in early February before heading overseas on 21 February for the Northern Hemisphere season.
