At a Special Council Meeting today Councillors resolved to enact a temporary Liquor Ban in the township of Omarama. The temporary Ban will be effective from 9.00 pm on Saturday 26 December 2009 to 6.00 am on Sunday 3 January 2010.

In the interests of public safety and health the Ahuriri Community Board requested Council enacts this temporary liquor Ban for the Omarama township over the Christmas/New Year period.

The temporary Liquor Ban covers the period of the Omarama ‘Christmas Rodeo’. The ban will reduce potential for drunk and disorderly behaviour, littering (including broken glass), violence and other anti-social offences. The ban will help to contribute to a more family orientated and safe atmosphere.

Waitaki District Council’s Community Safety officer and the Ahuriri Community Board will put up temporary signage at the boundaries of the Ban area and distribute information pamphlets to the public during the rodeo.

Police will be in charge of enforcing the ban.
