MARLBOROUGH

The Wellington Based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the Marlborough Sounds at approx 5:20pm today 14th Dec 09 to a man who nearly drowned while snorkeling

The helicopter with a Wellington Free Ambulance Helicopter Paramedic on board, responded to Ship Cove in the Marlborough Sounds.

As we understand it the man had been snorkeling and ingested some water and was brought unconscious onto the boat. People with him got him back onto the boat and into the recovery position.

The 40yr old Wangauni man was aboard the boat in the Outer Sounds when the incident occurred. People onboard rang 111 and the skipper headed to Ships Cove where there was a large wharf and a place for the helicopter to land.

After being assessed by the Paramedic the man was transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where he is being treated and assessed.
