WAITAKERE CITY

Construction of new housing at Hobsonville Point is poised to start next year following agreements reached with three leading New Zealand group home builders by Hobsonville Land Company (HLC) and its development partner, AVJennings.

Universal Homes, Jennian Homes and G.J. Gardner Homes have been contracted to deliver the first of 650 dwellings in stage one of the development on the former airbase site on the upper Waitemata Harbour, known as the Buckley Precinct.

The Buckley Precinct was approved by Waitakere City Council under a Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP).  It comprises a 60-hectare site that will eventually house the first 1080 dwellings, parks, local shops, primary and secondary schools, and daycare facilities.

Master-planning for the 167-hectare Hobsonville Point site includes a total of 3000 dwellings on completion of the project, public spaces, recreational and community facilities, and a 20-hectare marine industry precinct.

HLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Housing New Zealand.  It appointed Australian-listed company AVJennings as its preferred partner in late 2007 to develop stage one of Hobsonville Point. This is the company’s first development in New Zealand.

AVJennings' CEO Peter Summers says working with respected and recognised local builders was always at the forefront of the development strategy.

“We have been developing plans for Hobsonville Point together with our partners HLC for over two years.

“A key part of the strategy is to work with local builder partners to build quality homes which are great value and appropriate for Hobsonville Point’s unique harbourside location. We are thrilled to now have premium builder partners on board who are committed to deliver the project vision.”

Peter Summers says principles of smart housing design coupled with an environmentally responsible focus will drive outcomes.

“We have the commitment from our builder partners that all homes include responsible approaches to building durable, healthy, energy efficiency housing as well as a strategy for stormwater reuse.”

Universal Homes Chief Executive Officer Graham Street says being part of the new Hobsonville Point development was an opportunity his company did not want to miss.

“We see it as a great opportunity to be involved in developing an exciting, new residential community. Universal is looking forward to developing homes at Hobsonville Point which are built to high quality standards and meet the needs of  families in the 21st century.”

Civil construction works on the subdivision is well underway. The first display homes will be on site from early 2011 and the first dwellings at Hobsonville Point for sale in late 2010, with occupation from March 2011. There will be a range of two, three and four bedroom dwellings including terraces and stand-alone houses to suit a broad range of lifestyles and budgets – from first-time homebuyers, to families and those seeking investment opportunities.
