Entries are now open for the 2010 RaboPlus Big Coast mountain bike ride and with a new one-day 50 km option added, a bumper turn out is expected.

The ride begins on Saturday 13 March at the Rimutaka Rail Trail and continues around the Wairapara Coast to the finish in Eastbourne the next day.

“More than 400 participants are expected to travel from around the country to participate in the 100km, two day tour of the region's most spectacular tracks, including many that aren’t normally publicly accessible”, says Mayor David Ogden.

“The coastal route is the perfect mix of doable for moderately fit beginner and challenging for those wanting to test themselves. For the first time this year, participants can choose to do the first day only, which is a great option for families with younger children.

“All meals, equipment transport and entertainment are included in the entry fee so it really couldn't be easier to get out and enjoy the ride.”

Local rider Brian Pearson’s feedback on the 2009 Big Coast perfectly sums up the event: "the Big Coast ride is a brilliant experience and I recommend it as a unique way to traverse the historic railway incline and witness the secrets of our region's southern coastline. It’s fantastic to see a wide range of ages - even a family of three generations took part. "

One day entry is $90 for an adult and $45 for under 18s. The two day entry is $120 for adults and $60 for under 18s.

All the information on the RaboPlus Big Coast, including training information, pre and post event accommodation, transport and entry fees, is available at www.bigcoast.co.nz.

RaboPlus Big Coast is part of Hutt City Council’s Summer Scene Summer of Cycling and is presented in association with BikeNZ and sponsor RaboPlus.
