Tauranga, Monday 21 December 2009: Western Bay locals and holiday-makers are about to get an early Christmas present – free internet broadband at popular sites around Tauranga and

 Mount Maunganui.

Tauranga-based company EOL, leaders in wireless broadband technology, have set up several high-powered Wi-Fi hotspots this month which will deliver free internet and email access to the public

 from now until January 31.

The hot spots will be located in Tauranga’s CBD and The Strand, and across the harbour at Marine Parade, Pilot Bay and the Beachside Holiday Park.

EOL’s Managing Director Terry Coles says the promotion is designed to introduce potential customers to the company’s new high-speed wireless broadband as well as test out EOL’s new carrier

grade hotspot technology.

“This is the first time this equipment has been used on a large scale in New Zealand,” Coles says. “I think the public will be impressed because it will deliver three times the coverage area and five

times the speed of conventional Wi-Fi hotspots.”

The spatially adaptive beamforming wireless technology has been purchased from Israeli-based company, Wavion, and is compatible with all portable Wi-Fi devices such as laptops, iPhones,

 iPods and Blackberries.

“Wavion are world-leaders in Wi-Fi and by acquiring their expertise EOL is able to consolidate its position as a leading provider of wireless broadband in New Zealand,” Coles says.

Tourism Bay of Plenty’s general manager, Tim Burgess, says EOL’s promotion will also provide a timely boost for the region’s tourism market.

“It’s a wonderful facility to offer to our visitors, especially in this day and age when people holiday with their laptops and hand-held devices,” Burgess says.

“It puts Tauranga and Mount Maunganui at the cutting edge of information technology as it applies to the visitor industry and it’s another example of the innovative wireless solutions that EOL are offering.”

Priority One’s project manager, Greg Simmonds, says local businesses would also benefit because many employees remained on-call over the holiday season and needed to access their emails regularly.

“Having free access to wireless broadband from a business perspective is really useful and it certainly helps reinforce the perception of Tauranga as being a place to do business.”
