The Waitaki District Council has begun construction of the Wansbeck Street extension and the new Harbourside Walking & Cycling track.

Contracts Project Coordinator Rex Stringer said that Downer EDI started construction on 12 January. Council expects to finish the work by early April.

The project will cost approximately $788,000. NZTA will subsidize 67 per cent -approximately $528,000 – of the cost.

The first phase of the contract is the 185 metre extension of Wansbeck Street. The extension

will draw visitors from the heritage precinct on Tyne & Harbour Streets to the Harbourside.
The second phase - construction of the walking and cycling track - will begin early next week.

Work will commence at the Humber Street end of the track and carry on through to the Penguin Colony.
Council put the contract out to tender late last year. Four companies submitted prices. Council awarded the contract to Downer EDI Works.

Network Waitaki, a nominated Council subcontractor, will relocate all overhead lighting circuits below ground. Network Waitaki are working in conjunction with Downer EDI.

Waitaki District Council is working closely with Department of Conservation, White Stone Civic

Trust, Historic Places Trust, and business owners to ensure that the work is carried out with minimal disruption.
