Franklin District Council has started installing new signs and road marking at the approaches to schools throughout the district. Work has started on the approaches to Harrisville, Valley and Patumahoe schools, with more to follow. The total package at either end of the school zone includes: solar powered school signs, fluorescent school zone signs, side islands and coloured road surface and markings.

Franklin District Road Safety Co-ordinator, Monique Haines said “we want drivers to slow down and be very aware when driving in the vicinity of schools and this gateway approach is very, very, visible. Similar work done in Rodney District has been very successful with average speed reductions of 4 to 5 kilometres an hour measured during morning and afternoon peak times.”

This project is part of the School Travel Programme, which are three year contracts between schools, Franklin District Council and ARTA (Auckland Regional Transport Authority). The objectives of the programme are to make school journeys – active, social, safe and sustainable.
