CHRISTCHURCH

Fresh from stepping off the plane kiwi cyclist Hayden Roulston starts his European season this weekend at the Spanish stage race la Ruta del Sol.

Wearing his Columbia HTC Professional team colours for the first time in Europe Roulston said he was “really excited” to be heading back to Europe and getting his season underway.

“It will be good to get back in amongst it after a good Tour Down Under and some good training. The Classics season is full on from the start of April and I’m really motivated this year to do well.”

“I really want a result. It would be good to win something but that will depend on the team and the race and if a bit of luck goes my way,” he said.

Sprint specialist Mark Cavendish will also launch his 2010 campaign at the Spanish stage race with Roulston expected to play a vital role in his lead out.

After Ruta del Sol he will race in the iconic Paris-Nice stage race and Milan San Remo before the classics season gets fully underway in early April with the Tour of Flanders.
