Akaroa Water Restrictions Increased From Level One To Level Two.

The recent warm weather has increased water restrictions in the Akaroa
from level one to level two, affective from 1 March 2010.

Mark Christison, Water and Waste Unit Manager, says level one
restrictions were imposed at the end of last year as people were asked
to water their gardens on alternate days only.

"With the slightly cooler summer we've had, we didn't think we would
need to increase the restrictions - but the last few weeks have changed
that.

"We are now asking households to use hand held garden watering systems
only, and to not use irrigation systems. Residents should also try to
conserve water in general - use buckets instead of a hose when washing
vehicles and take short showers instead of baths" he says

Most water supplies in Banks Peninsula are fed by streams, which are
usually at their lowest over summer.

On top of this, Akaroa's population of 600 jumps to 3,200 during the
holiday season placing a huge strain on water supply.

Water restrictions are likely to remain in place until April 2010. For
