Franklin District Council is promoting a variety of composting systems this month, with free composting and worm farming demonstrations at two local venues. The benefits of home composting and ‘hands on’ tips for reducing your garden and kitchen waste will be demonstrated by local worm farmer Colin McPike.

The first demonstration will be at the Patumahoe Market Day (held in the car park, next to the Village Bar and Grill on Patumahoe Road), on Sunday March 14 from 10am till 11am. A second demonstration will be held the following weekend on Saturday March 20, from 10am till 11am, at Petals ‘n’ Pots Garden Centre and Cafe, Paerata Road, Pukekohe. Composting units will be available to purchase at each of the demonstrations.

Local worm farming expert Colin McPike of ‘Worms R Us’, says there are a variety of quick and easy ways people can ‘Create their own Eden’ at home by putting kitchen and garden waste to good use.

Franklin District Council is supporting local composting as part of the ‘Create your own Eden’ programme, offered by participating Councils in the Auckland region. A dedicated website provides easy steps to start composting, worm farming or using a Bokashi system. Visit www.createyourowneden.org.nz to download ‘how to’ guides on smart gardening and home composting. Check with your local library for access to the Create your own Eden website.
