The Department of Labour has completed its investigation into the rock fall incident that occurred in the Mangorewa Gorge on State Highway 36 between Rotorua and Tauranga on Thursday 6 August 2009.

The Department of Labour Service Manager, Bay of Plenty, Murray Thompson says that it appears that the parties involved at the time had taken all practicable steps to ensure the safety of their employees, contractors and sub contractors and other people in a place of work.

“Our investigation found that there is no indication a specific action or inaction of the Principal or their contractors lead to the rock fall and as such, the Department does not intend taking any further action” Mr Thompson says.

The rock fall came from an overhanging section near a construction work site involved in the widening of the existing road. The construction required the removal of rock from the gorge walls. Three members of the public were injured in the incident.

“No single cause for the rock fall could be determined and we are satisfied that the Principal and contractor’s engaged and followed “expert” advice” Mr Thompson says.

The Department of Labour has informed the injured people and all the parties involved of the outcome of its investigation.
