Are you ready to turn your lights out on Saturday night?

From 8.30-9.30pm on Saturday 27 March, lights will be switched off around the world as people participate in Earth Hour. Is your business or household participating?

Earth Hour is a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature that encourages people to switch off their non-essential lights and appliances for an hour to promote reducing energy use.

Franklin District Council Mayor Mark Ball says it’s easy to participate.

“Simply switch off your lights for an hour on Saturday night to show your support. Make a night of it - organise a candlelit dinner or games evening. It doesn’t take much to make a statement and show you care about the planet.”

Franklin District Council will be turning off all non-essential lighting in civic buildings to support Earth Hour.

47 councils across New Zealand have committed to Earth Hour, with more than 100 countries taking part.
