The Whakatane District Council is concerned for public safety following a number of complaints about speeding motorbikes in the Coastlands beach and on the Warren Cole Walkway.

Pete McLaren, the Council’s technical adviser for reserves, said sand dune planting to prevent erosion between Coastlands and Otamarakau are also being damaged by illegal vehicle use.

“It’s disappointing that a small number of people are ruining the reserves we’ve developed for the community’s enjoyment”.

The Council will be acting to enforce the bylaws by issuing warning notices and fines to repeat offenders. The use of security guards is also being investigated to patrol reserves and beaches.

The Beaches Bylaw allows for boats to be launched via the beach in approved areas. Vehicles must be removed from the beach while the boat is in use and the most direct route must be used to access the launch area.

Driving along the beach or along the top of the dunes is prohibited. Approved vehicles, such as surf lifesaving quad bikes, have a 20 kph speed limit on all reserves and beaches.

The police have also advised that vehicles used legitimately on reserves and beaches should be registered and have a warrant of fitness, and drivers must hold a current licence.

The Reserves and Beaches Bylaws which have been in place for a number of years and prohibit certain use of vehicles in these areas. To obtain a copy of the Beaches or Reserves Bylaw please visit www.whakatane.govt.nz
