WELLINGTON CITY

The Wellington Māori Cultural Society is immensely proud to bring you Wellington’s 37th Regional Kapa Haka Competitions at the Michael Fowler Centre starting at 1pm on Saturday 27 March 2010.

Kapa haka teams from around Wellington have spent several months preparing for this event and its there only opportunity to secure a coveted spot at Te Matatini (the National Māori Performing Arts competition) in 2011.

Society member, Puti Mackey says as well as the competitive aspect of the event it’s also about entertainment.

“It’s a great family event. Emcee Ria Hall is a gifted singer and songwriter and Cindy from Samoa performing. The audience will get to enjoy Wellington kapa haka at its best and other musical styles.”

Some of the kapa haka performers are kaumātua and they will be performing alongside their adult children and other rangatahi. Puti says “this mix of young and old is heartening and shows how te reo Māori and traditional song and dance are being handed down the generations.”

Tickets for the event are being sold through Ticketek. (www.ticketek.co.nz) Ticket prices range from $10 for a child to $20 for an adult, discounts for students, senior citizens and family bookings are available.

Wellington’s 37th Regional Kapa Haka Competitions is proudly supported by the Wellington City Council and Te Matatini.
