The Department of Labour visited 27 retailers throughout the country today to check compliance with shop trading legislation.

Of the 27 retailers, 19 were observed to be open and trading.

In the northern region (Northland and Auckland) five of 13 shops (all in the Auckland area) visited were observed open and trading. One out of one visited in Waikato (in Hamilton) was observed open and trading; while in the eastern region one out of one (in Napier) was observed open and trading.

Five visits were made in the central region – one in Palmerston North and four in Wellington. All were observed open and trading.

Inspectors made six visits in the South Island. All were observed open and trading.

Inspectors will file reports of each visit before decisions on further action are made. Because prosecutions are still to be considered, no further information on the identities of the retailers who were visited will be released at this time.
