An exhibition which symbolises work, creativity and heritage is a perfect way to showcase something different and “Pulling Strings – Aprons of Yesteryear” certainly does that.
Day one of the exhibition at Otautau Museum was held on Sunday with about 40 people attending.
Otautau Museum Trust trustee, Cathy Onellion said about 15 local women lent the family heirlooms to the museum to create the exhibition.
The late Ina Shaw was partly responsible for the exhibition because it was through the donation of three of her aprons to the Museum that the idea of an apron showcase came about, Mrs Onellion said.
The oldest of the aprons was from around 1900, showing exquisite detail and needle work, said Mrs Onellion.
In the past aprons were a practicality as women generally owned only a few dresses which were difficult to wash and dry, creating the need for aprons.
The exhibition shows the wearers of these aprons not only used them to keep clean but also as a canvas for creativity, she said.
The exhibition also contains one baby’s bib, believed to date from 1890.
Any one wishing to see these heritage pieces of womanhood can view them on Sunday March 4 on the final day of the exhibition.
