Two Olympians Glenn Snyders and Hayley Palmer set themselves up for tonight’s key swims after the heats of the State Insurance New Zealand Championship in Waitakere City this morning.

Snyders went under the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games to top the times in the 100m breaststroke at West Wave Aquatic Centre.

The High Performance Centre swimmer, who missed qualification in the 200m breaststroke last night by 1/10th of a second, clocked 1:01.58 to be faster than the qualification time.

Palmer also signalled her intentions after clocking 54.98 to be fastest in heats of the 100m freestyle, nearly half a second inside the qualifying time for New Delhi and a second outside her national record.

Both will need to replicate those performances tonight with official qualifying times only able to be set in the evening finals.

In other heats Moss Burmester pipped training mate Corney Swanepoel in heats of the 100m butterfly, Emily Thomas was fastest in the 50m backstroke, Beckie Dooley (Jasi) topped the 100m breaststroke and Carsten Corazza (Howick Pakuranga) in the 400m individual medley.

The finals start at 6pm tonight with the championships continuing until Friday. There is a special Skins and Charity event on Saturday featuring the current champions along with many of the greats from the past including Anthony Mosse, Paul Kingsman and Anna Simcic.
