It’s fast, it’s free and it’s all for you. Wireless hotspots, fast broadband, plus lots of exciting computer wizardry have hit the Dunedin Public Library network.

Where can I get access? The City, Mosgiel, Port Chalmers, Waikouaiti and Blueskin Bay Libraries all have new computers with free broadband internet - and software to inspire.

How did this happen? The service has come from the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa, which provides free access in public libraries so that all New Zealanders can benefit from accessing, experiencing and creating digital content.

How is it different to what we had before? Well, it is completely free to use, and the APNK computers come with webcams, headsets, USB ports and card slots, as well as lots of cool software. There is also unrestricted WiFi to connect your laptop, iPhone or other WiFi devices too.

So, what kind of things can I do? You can do all sorts of things. You can create documents with Microsoft Office or OpenOffice, listen to CDs and watch DVDs. You can use email and access your Internet banking, use USB flash drives and memory cards and even take your own photo with the webcam!

APNK technology connects people in many ways. Just the other week, one young woman using the new computer suite told us she had been talking to her brother in England via Skype, and it had been four months since she'd last talked to him.

Is there anything I can’t do?
You can’t install any software on the computers and while some gaming sites are available, network security blocks games such as Runescape.

And while you’re at your Library… pick up some great books to read, browse our magazines or take out a movie.
