Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia has welcomed the launch of the Ngati Kahungunu Violence Free Strategy today, saying it is a great example of a local Maori response to family violence.

"The strategy was launched at Ruahapia Marae in Hastings and boldly and proudly asserts that whanau violence is not normal," Mr Horomia said.

The strategy aims to promote standards of practice authentic to Ngati Kahungunu and empower whanau, hapu and iwi to embrace wellbeing, he said.

"Its objective is to integrate and coordinate approaches to whanau violence within the Ngati Kahungunu tribal areas."

The project will involve research work with whanau, discussions with hapu on how to formulate appropriate solutions and work to provide links with various government and other agencies working with family violence, some of which are also supporting the project.

Te Puni Kokiri has supported the development of the strategy, providing advice and information. The project coordinators have also been funded through TPK's Kaitataki-a-Rohe programme, Mr Horomia said.

"Today's launch is a great milestone for the iwi. It is also a great example for Maori and for New Zealand. It is the culmination of persistent and consistent mahi to develop a kaupapa Maori regional strategy based on tikanga and kawa.

"Everyone is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of children and young people in our communities. All of us must be vigilant, responsible and have zero tolerance for violence."
