Hat-trick for Woodcock and Devine at Norwood Awards

Wellington Blaze all-rounder Sophie Devine and Firebirds batsman Luke Woodcock were the standout winners at Cricket Wellington’s Norwood Awards tonight each claiming three trophies.

Both were named as Cricketer of the Year as well as men’s and women’s outstanding batsman. Devine won a third for her bowling while Woodcock claimed one for his fielding. In the Club and Individual awards Devine also won the Betty Maker Memorial Trophy for being the best all-rounder in women’s cricket.

Devine scored 270 One-Day and 134 Twenty20 runs and took 15 wickets for the Wellington Blaze in the One-Day competition and six Twenty20 wickets. She also took 12 wickets for the White Ferns and scored 276 runs.

Luke Woodcock broke the record for runs scored in a first-class season for Wellington. He scored 988 runs at 65.86 including a career best 220 not out against the Central Stags. He also scored 183 runs in the One-Day competition at 30.50.

The Norwood Awards are the highlight of the cricketing calendar in Wellington and reflect back on the 2009/10 season in both men’s and women’s cricket from club cricket to First Class.

The Norwoods, which are rich in history, were first held during the 1949/50 season and were originally funded by the Norwood Trust, founded by Sir Charles Norwood, a Wellington philanthropist who was also involved with setting up the Wellington Free Ambulance.

These days the Trust is still involved with the awards and works with a committee of dedicated personal to decide the winners. Those include Trust member Earl Cooper, Firebirds head coach Anthony Stuart, Blaze head coach Mark Borthwick, international scorer Ian Smith and Cricket Wellington CEO Gavin Larsen.

Larsen, who has won five Norwood Awards including Cricketer of the Year for the 1992/93 and 1994/95 seasons, said both Devine and Woodcock stepped up and produced stunning performances throughout the season, and in turn have been rewarded for their accomplishments. “I am thrilled for both Sophie and Luke who both had outstanding seasons for our First Class teams. Both are classy players who display a commitment and determination to excel at the highest level,” he said. “I applaud both of them for their superb achievements during the season.”
