ANZAC Exhibition At Our City O-Tautahi
A poignant exhibition focussing on themes of public and private grief associated with war memorials around Christchurch opens for ANZAC Day at Our City O-Tautahi.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning - war memorials and remembrance in Christchurch considers topics ranging from location and placement of memorials, the role memorials play in reconciliation and the healing process, and the responsibility of the nation (the state), communities and families.
The local debate for memorials in the city’s heart, the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel and the Sumner Peace Memorial Lamps, are among a number of local stories also included in the exhibition.
The exhibition encourages visitors to contribute by way of a personal tribute during the exhibition, such as an ANZAC poppy, a poem or a copy of a photograph. These can be laid at a memorial installation constructed especially for the exhibition. Local people will be able to request a digital photographic file of the installation.
The exhibition will also screen Citizen Soldier: ake ake kia kaha – forever strong. This film, produced by Christchurch City Council for Beca Heritage Week 2009 celebrates 150 years (1859-2009) of the Second Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast Battalion Group.
