Following the release of the Hazardous Activities and Industries List (HAIL) in October last year, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has been working with property owners to confirm and update their land use register listings.

Since then, the number of “Unverified” sites in the land use register has reduced by 384, from 1084 to 702.  Over the last 2 months, the Regional Council has visited a further 92 unverified sites, leaving 610 sites to be visited and verified.

Those 92 site reports have yet to be assessed and allocated a sub-category in the Land Use register.  The database of sites will be updated over the coming months to reflect these changes.  Meanwhile appropriate information on listed sites is being passed to the relevant city or district council to update their LIM or PIM databases.

The Regional Council also continues to verify the extent of the old Onekawa landfill site and is working to determine the depth of the soil cap through sampling of residential properties in the area.

The former Waipukurau Hospital is a new addition to the “Contaminated land based on commercial/ industrial land” sub-category in the Land Use register, due to asbestos contamination following the recent arson fire.

Work continues on key sites, particularly all former timber treatment sites which have been inspected by the environmental consultancy Pattle Delamore Partners.  The final two of these sites are still to be sampled.
