The Invercargill Civil Defence Rescue and Response Team was the winner of the Cliff Dale Rescue Competition in Christchurch at the weekend, Team Manager Bill Obers announced today.

Mr Obers said the Christchurch based competition tested teams’ general rescue skills and knowledge over six disciplines. Seven teams from throughout the South Island competed in the event.

“The Invercargill Team scored the highest points overall and was awarded the Cliff Dale Cup. It is the first time the trophy has been won by a team outside the Canterbury region – so we are absolutely delighted.

“The Team also won the Scout Cup for the best team leader in the competition – which was Allan Grigg.”

Mr Grigg recently moved to Hurunui District in Canterbury to take up the position of Emergency Management Officer for the Hurunui District Council. He previously worked for Invercargill City Council and was a member of the Rescue Team for 15 years.

The Cliff Dale Competition has been held almost every year since its inception in 1976.
