Coastal erosion has hit many parts of New Zealand. The Waitaki District is suffering significant erosion particularly along beach road repair and replacement costs are high. Council recently adopted the Draft Coastal Roads Strategy to deal with coastal erosion. Council is now seeking input from the community on the Draft Strategy.

The Draft Strategy proposes that while some maintenance of these routes will continue, ultimately coastal routes will be abandoned as they become unsafe. The public will still have access to beaches and alternative routes to Kakanui and other coastal properties.

Full details of the Draft Strategy are available from Council’s website, service centres or district libraries.

The public can ask questions and share their views on the Draft Coastal Roads Strategy with Councillors and Council Staff at upcoming road-shows, on Monday 17 May 2010: at the Kakanui Community Centre between (10:00-Noon) and at the Oamaru Opera House between (1:00pm-3:00pm). The road-shows are part of the wider public consultation programme that will run for over a month.

Submissions can be made in writing or online at www.waitaki.govt.nz and close at 5pm on Friday 28 May 2010.

Council will hear submissions at a meeting on Wednesday, 9 June 2010 before making a final decision on the Coastal Roads Strategy.
