The Restricted Fire Season for Franklin Rural Fire Authority areas will be lifted from Friday 7 May 2010. Franklin District Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that followed the correct process and applied for a permit over the Restricted Fire Season.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Andy Baker reminds people “When lighting fires at any time, they are responsible to ensure that there is no adverse effect to any neighbors from smoke. They must also ensure that there is no risk of the fire spreading. Common sense should always be applied.” He also says “People must also be aware of overriding rules of the Auckland Regional Council and Franklin District By Laws for fires in urban areas as well as for properties within 1km of Department of Conservation land where separate rules apply.”

Residents are reminded that whilst an Open Fire Season will be in place from Friday 7 May, the special Mangatawhiri Swamp area will continue to require a permit for all open air fires. People planning fires should also be aware of any restrictions in place under Franklin District Council’s District Plan and relevant by-laws and also the Regional Council plans and by-laws that may be applicable.
