Ongoing heavy rainfall in Southland today has resulted in a road closure.

The rain, following closely on from last week's floods, has caused water to flow across Cox Road, in the Tussock Creek area, and Southland District Council contractors have closed the road, between Collinson and Pullar Roads, as the water flows could increase during the night, Council area engineers manager Peter Thompson said.

The bridge on the Benmore Stockbridge Road is still closed and will not be reopened until a further inspection is carried out in the near future, Mr Thompson said.

All other roads are open but drivers are still urged to be careful as some of the worst hit roads have been damaged by flood water and debris.
