Motorsports fans are a step closer to having an international venue near Auckland airport with concept plans approved for Colin Dale Park.

A recent decision by the Policy and Activities Committee of Manukau City Council means resource consents for bulk earthworks can be sought, and detailed designs developed, with input from motor sports and adventure sports groups that have declared an interest.

Manukau Mayor Len Brown says he is pleased that work on the park is progressing.

“I am delighted that karting, BMX, off-road racing, blokarts, motorcross and supercross groups have chosen to make the park their future home,” says Mr Brown.

“Karting was where legends like Scott Dixon got their start and Colin Dale Park will be a great venue to develop New Zealand’s future motorsport stars. I'm excited about the prospects that this new venue presents and I look forward to seeing a venue that caters for our motorsport enthusiasts throughout our region, right here in Manukau city.”

Once resource consent is granted, work is expected to begin on the first stage of the park in 2011.
