One road has reopened this afternoon, but two remain closed in the Central Southland area because of flooding and its after-effects.

West Plains Taramoa Road, between Horwell and Taramoa Roads, has been reopened with flooding signs put up because of surface water, Southland District Council area engineers manager Peter Thompson said.

Cox Road is closed between Collinson and Pullar Roads, and the Benmore Stockbridge Road remains closed because further inspection is required to determine the stability of the bridge piles. This cannot happen until water levels have dropped further and so the bridge will be blocked with barriers
