Local community arts organisations have received a windfall of $27,000 in grants from the Creative Communities Scheme.

The money, provided by Creative New Zealand will be used by music, theatre and arts groups, and schools to support a number of performances, workshops and exhibitions throughout the year.

Chief Executive Diane Turner said the Council received a number of applications for grants which had to meet certain criteria laid down by Creative New Zealand.
“When approving funding we look for initiatives that increase community participation and diversity in arts.”

A variety of groups received funding including the Edgecumbe Choir which will host two Mozart performances. Theatre Whakatane will use $4,000 to help fund its highly successful ‘All Shook Up’ production and an upcoming musical variety show.
Support was also extended to the Summer Arts festival to bring a variety of artist’s and arts workshops to the District in 2011
